What is Legal Aid?
Legal Aid Queensland is a government-funded service that provides free or low-cost legal assistance to eligible Queenslanders who cannot afford a private lawyer. It exists to ensure that everyone — regardless of their financial circumstances — has access to justice.
Legal aid is not automatically available for all matters. Eligibility is assessed based on your financial situation, the type of legal matter, and the merits of your case. Carter & Co can guide you through the application process and help you understand whether you may qualify.
Our panel appointments
Carter & Co Family Law holds panel appointments with Legal Aid Queensland in the following areas:
Family Law
Including property settlements, parenting arrangements, consent orders, and matters arising from separation or divorce.
Child Protection
Representing parents, carers, and other parties in child protection proceedings before the Childrens Court of Queensland.
How to apply for Legal Aid
The process of obtaining legal aid can feel overwhelming — we're here to make it straightforward. Here's how it generally works:
Contact our office
Call us on 0431 675 414 to discuss your matter. We'll have an initial conversation to understand your situation and whether legal aid may be an option for you.
Means test
Legal Aid Queensland will assess your financial circumstances — including your income, assets, and liabilities — to determine whether you meet the financial eligibility criteria.
Merits test
Your matter is assessed to determine whether it is the type of case legal aid covers and whether there is sufficient merit to warrant funding.
Grant of aid
If approved, a grant of aid is issued and Carter & Co is assigned to represent you. We handle your matter with the same care and dedication as any privately funded client.
Who may be eligible?
Eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Generally, legal aid may be available to people who:
- Have limited income and assets
- Are involved in a family law or child protection matter
- Have a matter with sufficient legal merit
- Are at risk of serious consequences without legal representation
